Free VPN vs paid VPN: what changes?

Price tells you the subscription model, not whether a particular route is protected. Compare the allowances and provider policies, then use the same IP, browser and DNS checks on the plan you choose.

Test your VPN connection

Public IP and WebRTC checks are available here. Active DNS and IPv6-only route checks are temporarily unavailable.

Traffic allowances and server choice

Free plans can limit monthly traffic, countries or server selection. Paid plans often expand these allowances. An unlimited-data free plan can still restrict country selection or optional features, so compare the specific plan details.

Consider how often you connect and which destinations you need. Large file transfers and video consume more data than occasional browsing; access to a particular country may matter more than a headline server count.

Privacy depends on policies and implementation

A price tag does not establish logging behavior. Read the privacy policy, identify the operator and check which independent assessments apply to the current service and client. Distinguish a provider statement from a test you can reproduce.

Browser diagnostics can observe addresses, resolvers and network context. They cannot verify internal server logging, every encrypted packet or how a company responds to an account request.

Devices, support and optional features

Simultaneous connection limits, supported operating systems, P2P, streaming and support vary by plan. Check the official documentation for the device and feature you intend to use rather than applying a general free-versus-paid rule.

Browser proxy extensions and full-device clients also differ. A paid browser proxy can protect a narrower set of traffic than a free full-tunnel client.

Run the same connection tests on both

Record your ordinary public addresses, connect and reload the VPN test. Examine WebRTC candidates, the IPv6 route and DNS resolvers individually. Treat unchanged or unexpected results as questions about routing rather than judgments based on price.

A shared or new exit may be absent from our VPN inventories. Detection confidence should reflect the available evidence, even when a subscription is expensive.

Choose for your needs and verify changes

Use a free plan when its limitations meet your needs and its policies are acceptable to you. Consider a paid plan when a specific missing feature, allowance or support option justifies the cost. Keep the reasons concrete.

Repeat your checks after client updates, sleep and network changes. The useful comparison is the route and feature set you actually get, along with clear provider documentation, rather than a claim that one payment model is automatically private.
